Eco-Committee
Description of the activity
“The earth is our environment to protect and the garden to tend to” Pope Francis
The school’s Eco-Committee aims to improve the school’s impact on the environment. This year we are working towards achieving a prestigious Eco-Schools Green Flag award. To achieve this, we are working on projects around biodiversity, improving school grounds and reducing our waste. Some of our exciting projects have included; making crafts from recycled materials, making bird feeders, a fundraising cake sale and making blankets from crisp packets.
Reasons to participate
In Eco-Committee we are committed to reducing our impact on the planet and looking for fun and creative ways to spread this message. Members span different year groups and working together has developed our team work and leadership skills. The group is student led so we are given a space to voice our thoughts and opinions, and share these with other people with similar interests. Some of our projects are based in the school grounds which means we get to spend time outdoors, improving our mental health and taking time to appreciate the world around us. We have even been given opportunities to share our ideas with the school leadership team and external organisations such as Sunderland City Council, this has developed our communication skills and built our self-esteem. In the future we hope there will be opportunities to work with other groups in the community and take our initiative beyond the school grounds.
