Personal Development Curriculum
INTENT
We know from all those who internally, and externally, review the work of our school that our students are cheerful, creative, conscientious and confident. Employers regularly tell us that our students are professional and act with honesty and integrity. Our school has been very successful with numerous external accreditations, for the community and the individuals within it, over many decades. Our staff and students very much feel part of our Mercy community.
Our Personal Development curriculum helps our students to develop their opinions, their key attitudes and beliefs and essential life skills. It amalgamates the criteria for PSHE, RSE and CIAG.
Our programme of study supports students to develop necessary knowledge and understanding so that they can thrive in whatever their next step is be it the world of work or further education. Students study a wide range of topics with aim of developing the whole person to ‘live life to the full’ as Jesus intended. Our programme is aimed at providing pupils with the knowledge of how to be healthy, safe and happy, as well as how to pursue excellence. They acquire a range of transferrable skills including discussion, application and evaluation. These transferable skills enable students to prepare themselves proficiently for their next phase of learning and work.
The delivery of Personal Development supports subject specific literacy and numeracy for all our students to help them succeed in their studies and they aim to develop holistically the gifts and talents of each individual within a caring, compassionate, charitable and challenging Christian environment.
The range of topics covered helps students to develop an understanding of different social situations and the impact of various factors such as poverty and poor mental health. This along with other key lessons equip them with the necessary skills, knowledge and understanding to have a positive impact within family, friendship groups, school, university, the workplace and the wider community. Our wide-ranging and broad-based curriculum provides an opportunity for everyone. All learning styles and needs are considered and the curriculum is fully accessible for all pupils. The golden threads/key aims that run throughout each theme and each key stage are:
- How we are all unique; that recognising and demonstrating personal strengths build self-confidence, self-esteem and good health and wellbeing
- To understand what can affect wellbeing and resilience (e.g. life changes, relationships, achievements and employment)
- Study, organisational, research and presentation skills.
- A review of strengths, interests, skills, qualities and values and how to develop them to be compassionate and able to empathise with the suffering of others and the generosity to help others in trouble.
- To be respectful and able to identify other people’s personal space and respect the ways in which they are different.
- To be courteous in their dealings with friends and strangers.
- To be honest, committed to living truthfully and with integrity.
In KS3 pupils cover key themes relating to their physical and mental health, they begin to develop their resilience and self esteem, relationships and sex education as well as studying basic first aid and an introduction to the world of work.
In year 10 pupils develop their understanding of relationships, health, British Values and they develop their work related learning with work experience.
In Year 11 pupils focus more on elements of employment, further study and financial independence in preparation for their next step. They look at the legal elements of sexual harassment and exploitation, they develop their understanding of relationships and sex education.

Relationships and Sex Education is now compulsory for all pupils and must be embedded into the curriculum. Many of the relevant topics are taught in CIAG lessons, however some topics are taught separately by our RSE coordinator Mrs Hoey.
For year 7, 8 and 9 these sessions are completed during their ‘RSE DAY’ which involves a series of exciting sessions delivered by Mrs Hoey and where possible outside agencies.
For year 10 and 11 they will receive a half term of RSE as part of their core PE rotations. These lessons are delivered by Mrs Hoey using resources provided by Ten Ten. Ten Ten are a company who specialise in resources for use within Catholic Education. All topics and content are taught in line with guidance from the Catholic Education Service and as with PSHEe they are fully inclusive.
If you have any queries relating to PSHEe or RSE please contact your child’s pastoral leader or Mrs Hoey.

We know that our students are reliable, responsible, resilient and radical individuals who are ready to use their talents positively wherever life may take them. Generations of students have chosen St. Anthony’s over the decades and centuries. We are extremely proud of our alumni, many of whom are regular contributors to our school community as it continues to grow and develop. Many families have fourth or fifth generation connection to our school and many staff have given decades of service, such is the impact of being part of this school community.
Everyone in our community is aware of what it means to be an Antonian: to pursue excellence, to build community, to show concern for those who may be disadvantaged and to particularly support the education of women and girls. We have definitely had an impact within this “city by the sea”, and well beyond it, since we were founded in 1904. We are confident that our distinctive ethos will continue to have a big impact as it is carried forward by future generations of Antonians.
